A 2-d Filter Specification for Sonar Image Thresholding

چکیده
We propose a new image sonar segmentation by combining two complementary competencies. On the one hand, following an image processing approach, we aim at partitioning raw image data to provide a binary image. On the other hand, we take advantage of technological knowledge such as the principle of sonar image formation. For sonar images, grey-level histogram generally presents a single mode which entails a poor separation of two theoretical modes related to reverberation and shadow subpopulations of the image. The separation of these two modes is of critical interest in a further description of objects from their cast shadows. In this paper, an optimal filter is specified by a criterion which aims at changing the statistical properties of each area while making threshold value selection from the histogram easier. While minimizing the output pixels variance, pixel values in each region concentrate around the respective average value while, simultaneously, two distinct modes appear on the histogram of the filtered image. The minimum value found between the two modes in the smoothed histogram leads to the searched threshold. In addition, we show how filter aspect depends as well on the image sonar resolution as on sonar parameters.

In this paper we have presented a new procedure for sonar image target tracking using PHD filter besides K-means algorithm in high density clutter environment. We have presented K-means as data clustering technique in this paper to estimate the location of targets. Sonar images target tracking is a very good sample of high clutter environment. As can be seen, PHD filter because of its special f...
متن کاملSector Scan Sonar Images Using Adaptive Thresholding
The SAR and SAS images are perturbed by a multiplicative noise called speckle, due to the coherent nature of the scattering phenomenon. If the background of an image is uneven, the fixed thresholding technique is not suitable to segment an image using adaptive thresholding method. In this paper a new Adaptive thresholding method is proposed to reduce the speckle noise, preserving the structural...
متن کاملHeight Estimation of a Sonar Towfish from Side-Scan Imagery
The algorithm described uses a combination of Haar wavelet decomposition and Kalman filtering to track the noisy echoes. This was able to compute the towfish height on the fly with a minimal delay and without thresholding. Its performance is demonstrated using real side-scan sonar data and is shown to be robust with respect to the great variation in echo level (including drop-outs) and to the p...
متن کاملRadius of Curvature and Location Estimation of Cylindrical Objects with Sonar using a Multi-sensor Configuration
Although acoustic sensors are inexpensive and convenient to use in time-of-flight (TOF) ranging systems, they have some important limitations one of which is their low angular resolution that makes localization difficult. In this paper, an adaptive multisensor sonar system is introduced to compensate for the low angular resolution and improve the localization accuracy. The sensor configuration ...
متن کاملAn Efficient Curvelet Framework for Denoising Images
Wiener filter suppresses noise efficiently. However, it makes the out image blurred. Curvelet preserves the edges of natural images perfectly, but, it produces visual distortion artifacts and fuzzy edges to the restored image, especially in homogeneous regions of images. In this paper, a new image denoising framework based on Curvelet transform and wiener filter is proposed, which can stop nois...
